Who killed the pipeline? Republicans or Obama?

If you have listened to the news on the Keystone XL Pipeline today you might be thinking that the Republicans are responsible for killing the pipeline – you would be wrong. After hearing these reports I decided to read Obama’s official statement on his rejection of the Keystone XL Pipeline. He suggested that Republicans ‘forced’ his hand by setting an arbitrary 60-day deadline for a decision. When I heard the explanation on NPR this morning the president’s position seemed reasonable and appropriate. Those crazy Republicans wanted to force him to make a decision before he had enough time to study the impact of the pipeline – they only gave him two months. Wow. So I decided to do a little research of my own. Turns out the truth is very different from what either Obama or NPR wants us to believe. Obama has been delaying a decision for political reasons since entering office in 2008 – more than three years…

The Keystone XL was proposed in 2008 and was approved by the National Energy Board in 2010.  Obama and NPR’s assertion that Republicans are ‘rushing’ him is completely BS. His administration has had three years to study the impact of the pipeline. The Republican’s 60 day deadline for a decision was in direct response to Obama’s announcement in November that he was going to delay a decision on the pipeline until November 2013 – just days after the presidential election. Obama wasn’t rushed – he was forced to admit what he was planning all along – to reject the pipeline. The only way we get the pipeline is to get a new President, period.

Obama claims that he is concerned about the pipeline’s route through the environmentally sensitive Sandhills in Nebraska. What he doesn’t tell you is that Keystone worked extensively with the US Department of State and came up with 14 (yes 14) different routes including one route that avoided the Sandhills entirely. In November the Governor of Nebraska signed to compromise bills with the pipeline builder to move the route out of the Sandhills.

At the end of the day Obama is against the pipeline. Had it not been for the Republicans forcing him to reveal his decision the American people wouldn’t have known about his decision until after he was reelected. Will this information make a difference? I hope so. Energy independence is VERY important for America. Sending our money to the Middle East is simply a bad idea. Depending on the Middle East for our oil is a VERY bad idea. Today we produce around 60% of our own oil and with the pipeline the Americas could produce more than 2/3rds of our oil – within a decade we could produce 100%.

Steve Jobs was a conservative?

I am both a fan of Steve Jobs and a conservative. I knew Steve was a Democrat, but I never realized he was a conservative. Details from his biography have begun to leak and some of the revelations relate to his political views.

Growing up the adopted son of registered Democrats it wasn’t a surprise that Jobs became a Democrat himself. But over the years it is clear Jobs became less and less comfortable with the left-wing agenda he embraced in his youth.

When Jobs met with Obama last year he told the president, “You’re headed for a one-term presidency.” He criticized the president’s hyper-regulatory administration explaining that it was easier for Apple to build factories in China than here in the United States. He detailed the regulations and costs the administration placed on businesses. He also criticized Obama’s unending support for unions and union work rules. He cited dire concerns about our education system explaining that the teachers unions prevented education reform. Jobs suggested the teachers unions be dissolved and that principals be allowed to hire and fire teachers based on merit.

After that first meeting Jobs suggested Obama meet with a larger group of CEOs who might be able to help him change his thinking. Obama’s team ballooned the invite list and turned the meeting into a fund raising event. Jobs was frustrated and threatened not to attend. Of course Jobs’ attention to detail is legendary – once he learned that the menu for the CEO dinner/fundraising event was far to expensive and fancy he tried to simplify it. Obama objected as he really likes chocolate truffles. Jobs was frustrated that the Democratic Party just didn’t fit him anymore. Jobs would never admit it to himself, but he would have been far more comfortable as a Republican…

The truth about the Occupy Wall Street Movement

Everyone seems to have their own opinion about what the Occupy Wall Street folks are fighting for, but very few have any facts to back up their positions. Democratic pollster, Douglas Schoen, polled 75% of the actual protesters in New York’s Zuccotti Park and shared the results in a Wall Street Journal article earlier today.

According to the pollsters, “what binds a large majority of the protesters together—regardless of age, socioeconomic status or education—is a deep commitment to left-wing policies: opposition to free-market capitalism and support for radical redistribution of wealth, intense regulation of the private sector, and protectionist policies to keep American jobs from going overseas.”

If you are in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street folks you are in a VERY small minority and out of step with most Americans. According to the study, “41% of Americans self-identify as conservative, 36% as moderate, and only 21% as liberal.” Strangely, Obama, in an ABC interview that will air tonight, indicated, “We are on their side“. I hope he is just pandering and doesn’t actually oppose free-market capitalism…

Here are some of the results from the polling:

  • 52% have participated in prior political movements
  • 98% support civil disobedience to achieve their goals
  • 31% support violence to advance their agenda
  • 85% are employed (within single digits of national unemployment rate)
  • 90% supported Obama in 2008
  • Today 51% disapprove of Obama (44% approve)
  • Today 48% say they will vote to re-elect Obama
  • 32% call themselves Democrats
  • 33% say they don’t belong to a political party
  • 65% believe government must guarantee access to health care, college education and secure retirement (regardless of cost)
  • 77% support raising taxes on the rich
  • 58% oppose raising taxes on everyone
  • 49% of protestors think bank bailouts were necessary

Our Apologist in Chief

This morning I was surprised to read that President Obama offered to apologize to Japan’s emperor for the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in WWII. Both of my grandfathers fought in WWII. My Dad’s father, Ralph Muse Sr., was a bomber pilot in the Army Aircorps and was stationed in the Pacific theater fighting the Japanese to retake Kiska and Attu (part of Alaska). He is still alive and well and is fond of telling us stories about his battles against the Japanese. During the Aleutian Island campaign hundred

s of pilots were killed (225 planes were shot down by the Japanese) and many of them were his friends. My grandfather was shocked when he saw video of Obama bow to the Japanese Emperor, but it wasn’t unprecedented (Nixon bowed to Hirohito in a visit to Alaska).  I shudder to think what he would say when he learns that Obama wanted to apologize for his actions and the actions of his fellow airmen in WWII (my granddad is seventh from the left).

There are lots of things Obama should apologize for, but WWII is not one of them. The bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima forced the Japanese to end the war – a war that had cost the lives of between 3,000,000 and 10,000,000 (most likely 6 million) Chinese, Indonesians, Koreans, Filipinos and Indochinese (not to mention American prisoners of war). Had we not dropped bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima who knows how many more millions of lives would have been lost.

Fortunately, Japan’s Foreign Minister Yabunaka refused to allow Obama to apologize for the bombing indicating it was a “nonstarter”. But according to the State Department Obama has been busy making other apologies. You might be surprised to learn that after we killed al-Qaida leader Samir Khan and Anwar al-Awlaki last month, the Obama administration contacted the Khan’s family to ‘express its condolences’ for killing the terrorist.

My message to Obama: please quit apologizing for the sacrifices of our nations heroes. Spend more time being appreciative of the sacrifices of those who came before – spend less time agonizing over their victories.
